Pros and Cons of Eating papayas

The papaya is a wonderful fruit as it has many health benefits. But, as a coin as two sides, papaya also has its pros and cons. In this article, we will study about pros and cons of eating papayas. 

Pros of eating papayas

Papaya has the following advantages:

It is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It provides vitamins such as vitamin A, B and C. it also provides fibers to the body. Papaya pulp also contains a wide variety of phytochemicals such as phenols. 

It can be used for making a wide variety of dishes. Raw papaya can be cooked to make special stews and curries. In Thai cuisine, it is used for making Thai salad. In many parts of the world unripe green fruit and leaves are used for making a salad. It is also used for making jellies. 



Green papaya and the tree’s latex is a rich source of papain. It is a protease that is used for tenderizing meat. It helps to break down tough fibers found in the meat. 

Papaya is a wonderful fruit that has been used traditionally for the treatment of digestive disorders. It is used for making traditional remedies.  It also helps in treating constipation.  It is also known to have breast enlarging properties. Papain is used for the treatment of skin diseases such as cuts, rashes, stings, etc. Papain is used for making ointments and gels. 

Papaya is also used as a natural medicine for contraception and inducing abortion. It is traditionally believed that raw papaya can help to prevent pregnancies and induce abortion.

Cos of eating papayas

There are a few disadvantages as well of eating papayas that are listed below:

Papaya is susceptible to ringspot virus that may cause premature molting and malformation in the leaves. This virus was a great threat to the Hawaii’s papaya industry. It is also susceptible to fruit fly that is a small wasp-like an insect. This insect was found to lay its eggs in young fruit. 

Pregnant ladies should not eat papaya as it can cause abortion. Thus, a papaya should not be eaten by a pregnant woman.

If the papaya is eaten in more amounts, it can adversely affect your skin because the beta-carotene present in the fruit can produce discoloration of the skin.
